Abstract

Prediction of ground motion through attenuation laws has been the studied by many researchers. Currently, building codes implement traditional seismic intensity measures such as pseudo-acceleration for the fundamental period of the structure Sa (T1), peak ground acceleration (PGA), among others, which have shown significant uncertainty when predicting seismic demands. At present, there are seismic intensity measures that considerably reduce the uncertainty in predicting structural response. Previous research has demonstrated that the seismic intensity measure INp quantifies more accurately the characteristics of the seismic event and the structural response to seismic actions. Therefore, this study presents a preliminary proposal of an attenuation law that estimates ground motion based on an advanced seismic intensity measure INp. This proposal is developed through the application of genetic algorithms, a metaheuristic tool characterized by its high robustness and accuracy. During the study, INp response spectra were generated from a database of interplate seismic events recorded by stations at Ciudad Universitaria at the National Autonomous University of México. Finally, through the optimization technique, the adjustment coefficients for the selected structural periods were estimated, which allowed for obtaining satisfactory results when compared with the previously generated INp response spectra.
